Diffs and Breathers

Gadday guys I'm new to the page and have a couple questions about diffs and diff breathers that I was hoping someone could help me out with. I have a 1993 SWB landcruiser lx, it has both rear and front diff lockers that both have breathers running into the engine bay. However I have recently done some crossings and water seams to get into my diffs (even tho the water hasn't gone above my breathers) could this be due to water being sucked in though pinion Seals due to not letting the diffs cool for a couple minutes before crossing. The breathers are also reasonably old so could they need replacing due to being blocked ? Was wondering if anyone has some tips or ideas about why I might still be getting water in my diffs, any help would be appreciated- cheers Ben

They could be blocked or not big enough. Also your seals might be less than perfect. Also what were you doing before the water? If you have been working things hard they will be hot and the air inside the diff will contract rapidly when cooled by water If the breather cant supply enough air it has to come from somewhere. Your seals are designed to keep oil in not necessarily water out

Thankyou for the information, I was driving around before crossing but not any faster than 50km/h. My rear diff does have a very slow leak in it from witch a little oil does ooze from, could this be having an effect on water getting inside ?
Cheers Ben
